Happy Valentine's Day!
But it wasn't quite so happy back in 1653.
In fact, it was downright illegal.
Traditional celebrations once popularised by Henry VIII had been banned throughout England.
Because the country was under new management, so to speak.
And Oliver Cromwell may have been many things...
Ruthless. Notorious. Driven by his puritanical beliefs.
But romantic probably wasn't one of them.
A truly unique figure.
His name is a symbol of civil war, revolution and execution.
- He helped to overthrow the monarchy
- He signed King Charles I's death warrant
- As a Civil War soldier he never lost a major battle
- And he remains the only person without royal blood to become sovereign ruler of England
That's why more than 4,000 books have been written about his life.
But reading about history is one thing...
Owning a genuine historic artefact is something much more special.
And because of everything it represents...
Oliver Cromwell's signature is an incredibly powerful piece of history.
It's also incredibly rare.
Cromwell is such an important figure in English history, which makes his signature highly sought-after by collectors.
But he lived over 350 years ago, so it's unsurprising so few examples have survived intact.
That makes finding a good Oliver Cromwell signature a difficult task.
Only 3 letters are known to exist from the first 40 years of Cromwell's life.
And many later signed documents are owned by museums.
So it's a name I rarely have the pleasure of offering.
But today I have one for you.
I know it's a piece that a lot of collectors will be interested in.
And what's more...
It features one of the finest Cromwell signatures I've ever seen.
A magnificent Oliver Cromwell document.
Just one year after he signed Charles I's death warrant.
It's a large, visually impressive document measuring 7.3” by 11.4”.
And it survives in superb condition after more than 370 years.
You will seldom find a more attractive Cromwell-era piece.
The document is dated 14 February 1650 and addressed to Sir John Woollaston, Cromwell's Treasurer at War.
It's an order to pay soldiers in a New Model Army cavalry regiment commanded by colonel Philip Twisleton, who Cromwell knighted in 1658.
This content, relating directly to the New Model Army, will certainly interest collectors with a passion for military history.
And then there's the signature itself.
A name infamous throughout history.
Signed by the same hand that signed the death warrant of King Charles I.
There it is in black and white.
One of English history's most infamous names.
Signed by the man himself. "O Cromwell".
This is a truly exceptional historic autograph.
It's large and clear. Bold and prominently placed.
And it's instantly recognisable. The name 'Cromwell' leaps off the page at you.
When he later became Lord Protectorate in 1653, Cromwell signed as 'Oliver P' - with the "P" standing for "Protectorate".
Which makes this form of his autograph even scarcer.
And to my mind, far more desirable.
I've offered fewer than five in my whole career.
And when you consider Cromwell's story, and his infamous legacy...
You can understand why collectors are so keen to own it.
An important piece of English history.
And it's one of the finest Oliver Cromwell signed documents you can own.
A rare example that still remains in private hands.
- It's a large and visually impressive display piece
- It survives in superb condition after 373 years
- And Cromwell's signature is bold and highly prominent
It's one of the very few I've handled in 45 years as a dealer.
And in recent years I've seen Cromwell's signed letters sell for more than £70,000 at auction.
So this is your opportunity to acquire an outstanding item, rich in history and rare in this condition.
