A beautiful Georgian cotton style bustier that was worn by Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot is getting collectors' pulses racing at PFC Auctions.
|
Currently selling for 17,000 ($25,703), the bustier is joined by a stellar line-up of Monroe memorabilia - a tribute to the Blonde Bombshell's popularity at auction.
The lot offers great value, with a bra from Some Like it Hot selling for $28,125 at Julien's in May - the bustier is a far more substantial and typically Marilyn piece.
The bustier is particularly sought after as a screen worn item from what is perhaps Marilyn Monroe's greatest and best-loved film, featuring in the bus scene. It is accompanied by a brass plaque reading:
"Designed by Orry Kelly for Marilyn Monroe 1959 (Some Like it Hot) - Donated to the Albatross, Las Flores, Malibu by Joe E Brown and Family 1963"
The tags inside the garment read "Custom Fitted", "Property of United Artists", "Studio Only" and "Marilyn Monroe". It last sold at Bonhams in 2006 and comes with a Marquee Capital Certificate of Authenticity.
Also making a star appearance in the sale in Marilyn's pre-1950s wool bathing suit, which is currently selling for 2,000 ($3,208). With her name written on the Swimaway label in black ink, it is accompanied by certificates of authenticity from Marquee Capital and the LA Prop and Wardrobe Co.
There is also a spectacular Marilyn Monroe-owned rhinestone and obsidian bib necklace, which was sold at Sotheby's Heather Holmberg auction in 1998. Selling at 750 ($1,133), the necklace is auctioning alongside a gold effect lock of Marilyn's from the same auction, which has received bids of 800 ($1,209).
