Fleetwood Mac's Rumours Grammy beats estimate by 103%

The Grammy Award Fleetwood Mac received for their seminal 1977 album, Rumours, sold for $44,291 at Nate D Sanders on August 25.

That's an increase of 101.3% on its $22,000 estimate.

The recording of the album was notoriously fraught with difficulties, as the band struggled with breakups, creative differences and cocaine psychosis.

Studio owner Chris Stone told Billboard magazine in 1997: "The band would come in at 7 at night, have a big feast, party till 1 or 2 in the morning, and then when they were so whacked-out they couldn't do anything, they'd start recording".

The result was one of the greatest albums of all time.
