A 1976 typed open letter by John Lennon will cross the block at RR Auction with an estimate of over $25,000.
The lot is addressed to his ex-wife Cynthia and was intended to be published in a weekly magazine.
John Lennon has signed the letter and included a characteristic doodle
It’s accompanied by a handwritten note asking the editors to consider it for publication.
Cynthia Twist (formerly Lennon) wrote an article in a British woman’s magazine on the reasons behind the couple’s divorce.
She pinpointed John’s increasing drug use and affair with Yoko Ono as reasons that the relationship failed.
Lennon writes in part: “As you and I well know, our marriage was over long before the advent of L.S.D. or Yoko Ono…and that’s reality!
“…I don’t blame you for wanting to get away from your ‘Beatle’ past.
“But if you are serious about it, you should try to avoid talking to and posing for magazines and newspapers! We did have some good years, so dwell on them for a change…”
It’s unclear whether the letter was printed in the magazine.
Much to Lennon’s chagrin, Cynthia did go on to publish her tell-all account of their marriage, A Twist of Lennon, in 1978.
We have this 1976 John Lennon signature for sale.
The sale will also feature a set of pages from a guest book belonging to high ranking Nazi and SS Obergruppenfuhrer Philipp Bouhler – a deeply unpleasant man even by Nazi standards.
The pages feature signatures from figures including Hitler, Himmler and Goebbels.
It’s valued at $5,000.
The auction will close on August 9.
