An electric piano and cassette recorder used to produce John Lennon's Double Fantasy album is up for auction at Sotheby's.

The lot is among the highlights of a rock and pop memorabilia sale in London on September 29, with an estimate of £20,000-30,000 ($30,722-46,083).

The album was the last one Lennon would ever work on. He began writing in 1980, following a sailing trip around Bermuda in 1980.

Some of the earliest demos for the record were produced on this piano and recorder at the Fire Island beach house of art dealer Sam Green, who was a friend of Yoko Ono.

Writer Albert Goldman explained: "John must have been astonished when he entered this simple beach house and found it equipped with a piano and a Yamaha electric piano, like a recording studio.

"Sam had spent three years getting a phone installed, yet Yoko had wafted these instruments over the Great South Bay in just the last few days."

In 2000 the piano Lennon used to write Imagine sold for £1.4m ($2.1m).

Other lots in the sale include a piano used by Abba, the original lyrics to Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall and the first contract the Beatles ever signed with manager Brian Epstein.
