The green cardigan Kurt Cobain wore during Nirvana's seminal MTV Unplugged performance is to cross the block at Julien's Auctions in LA.
It will star in a November 7 sale with a valuation of $40,000-60,000.
Cobain wore the cardigan onstage for MTV Unplugged in 1993 |
Cobain gave a startling and intense performance during the set. It was recorded in November 1993, and aired in December, just a few months before his death in April 1994.
The funereal stage dressing and Cobain's tense and unhappy demeanour (he was attempting withdrawal from heroin) seem almost prophetic in hindsight.
Julien's comments: "The Manhattan brand sweater is a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket, size medium.
"The sweater was obtained from a close friend of the Cobain family."
A lock of Cobain's hair is also on offer, with a valuation of $8,000-10,000.
Courtney Love, Cobain's former wife, gave a section of his hair to doll maker Dame Darcy. The lock offered is what was left over after the doll was finished.
Memorabilia associated with Cobain is growing in value as the grunge generation gets older and comes into money. In 2004 his Mosrite Gospel Mark IV guitar sold for $117,500 at Heritage Auctions.
The sale will also feature an early Beatles drum skin and a gold piano belonging to Elvis Presley.
