Lennon-McCartney letter to auction for $60,000 at Profiles in History

A draft letter typed by John Lennon and addressed to Paul McCartney has surfaced as part of Profiles in History's May 30 sale of The Property of a Distinguished American Collector Part III.

Lennon McCartney letter
The Lennon-McCartney partnership had broken down long before the band parted company

The two-page item is expected to sell for $40,000-60,000, as one of several important letters featured in the auction. It was written in the early 1970s and shows the tensions for which the group's final years have become known.

The letter is written on John Lennon and Yoko Ono's personal stationary, and is addressed to both McCartney and his wife Linda. Written in the context of the Beatles' break-up in 1970, it reads in part:

"Do you really think most of today's art came about because of the Beatles? I don't believe you're that insane - Paul - do you believe that? When you stop believing it you might wake up!"

A similar six-page letter from Lennon to McCartney, in which he discusses the band's split as well as their treatment of Yoko Ono, appeared at Christie's in October 2012, but failed to sell.

We specialise in the finest Beatles memorabilia, including this fantastic John Lennon signed drawing.

The collection at auction also contains 58 handwritten letters from President Eisenhower, written between 1942 and 1945.

Documenting the president's second world war campaign as well as his personal life, it is believed to be the largest extant group of Eisenhower's letters, and may see bids up to $120,000.
