The dress is a pink gown, which pays tribute to the famous Travilla number worn by Monroe in Diamond's Are a Girl's Best Friend. In fact, it was originally created for a Marilyn Monroe biopic, and later borrowed for the Material Girl video in 1985.
Valued at $40,000-60,000, the dress' estimate is testament to the value of Madonna's memorabilia among collectors. However, it does not come close to the price achieved by Monroe's dress, which sold for $310,000 in 2010, despite claims that it was not the real dress.
Madonna actually hated wearing the Monroe tribue, saying it was incredibly uncomfortable for filming.
Also at $40,000-60,000 is Madonna's wedding dress from her marriage to Sean Penn in 1985, which was designed for her by Marlene Stewart, who also made some of Madonna's costumes. It is accompanied by the striking black bowler hat Madonna famously wore to the wedding.
The dress the singer wore while performing True Blue on her Who's That Girl tour is also in the sale's top lots, selling with a $30,000-50,000 estimate.
Madonna has proved one of the most collectible of all female singers, achieving collectability long before the end of her career, due in part to her controversial nature and inimitable style.
