Steve Rubell's Studio 54 was 1970s New York's number one hot-spot, and now those that managed to slip past the exclusive venue's velvet rope will be able to relive those glory days, as an extraordinary archive of memorabilia comes to auction.

Offered on January 19 in Florida, the archive celebrates the disco's four-year run, in which it welcomed the world's biggest stars. It has been consigned by Bill Hamilton, a fashion designer who shared an apartment with Rubell, in which the archive has remained for the past 28 years.

A potentially unique piece from Andy Warhol, 2012's best-selling artist

Rubell and Andy Warhol were known to have been very close friends, and the lead item of the auction will be a 20-inch dollar sign sculpture that Warhol gifted to the Studio 54 owner. Estimated at $30,000-50,000, it has been signed by Warhol in felt pen and is believed to be unique.

The sale follows the announcement that Andy Warhol was 2012's top selling artist. Paul Fraser Collectibles is currently offering one of Warhol's iconic black polo neck jumpers for sale.

Rubell's unforgiving record of who was hot and who most certainly was not

Encapsulating the exclusivity of the club is the Studio 54 guestbook, in which the names of the club's VIP guests were recorded. With Rubell indicating next to each name whether the guest would receive free entry and drinks, it is expected to sell for $2,000-3,000.

Also featuring is a vast selection of photographs, providing a rare glimpse of the venue's most important guests, as well as signed programmes and tickets. The highest valuations of the sale are held by some of the artworks that once hung on Studio 54's walls, including pieces from Willem de Kooning and Salvador Dali.
