The artwork for Snoop Dogg's 1993 album Doggystyle is one of the surprise top lots in Heritage Auctions' December 6 Entertainment and Music Memorabilia Signature Auction in Dallas.
|
Created by Joe Cool, the cover art is some of the most iconic in hip-hop, with the 1993 record regularly placed in lists of the best rap albums ever produced.
It has sold over five million copies to date and set a record for the biggest US album debut in history with 800,000 copies sold in the first week.
The artwork is expected to sell for more than $20,000, rivalling estimates of Beatles and Elvis memorabilia - long established as some of the most valuable in music collecting.
It comes to auction for the very first time, having been purchased from Christopher Burch, who collaborated with Joe Cool for the piece.
The work is missing the artist's name, Snoop Doggy Dogg, which appeared on the final LP but was only added during the printing process.
Snoop Dogg held a charity auction earlier this year, offering a painting he made while staying at the Palazzo Versace, to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. It sold for $10,200.
Also starring at Heritage Auctions is a unique script for an unmade Beatles film.
