The iconic sign from legendary LA nightclub Whisky a Go Go is selling at Saco River Auction.
The lot measures 13 feet across and reads “The Whisky”.
It’s valued at $35,000-45,000 ahead of the January 25 auction.
Whisky a Go Go is one of America's most famous nightclubs
The club opened in LA in 1964 and acted as a crucible for the California rock scene, with many bands getting their first break there.
This sign hung over the door to the venue during its heyday in the 1980s and 1990s, when it hosted bands as diverse as Blondie, Van Halen and Nirvana.
The auction house comments: “Performing on its infamous stage is one of the true rites of passage in the world of rock ‘n’ roll and it is credited with having launched the careers of countless bands including The Doors, Frank Zappa, Buffalo Springfield, Van Halen, Motley Crue, and Guns N' Roses.
“It has been recognized as one of the most influential and important musical venues in the world.”
Remarkably, the club remains open to this day.
In 2004, the sign was replaced with another that boasts its full name.
Could the lot reach $45,000?
It’s possible, but it’s worth noting that last year the awning from venerable (and more widely known) New York punk venue CBGBs sold for $30,000 at Sotheby’s.
That said, the fact that this is a neon sign may make it more attractive to buyers as a display piece.
