Hi fellow collector
The year was 1901.
And a man sat in front of a blank sheet of paper.
One of the greatest writers in the history of the English language.
Rudyard Kipling.
After a moment's thought, he picked up his pen and began to write.
40 lines of stirring poetry. From the hand of a master.
And incredibly, 121 years later...
That same sheet of paper now falls to you.
Rudyard Kipling - one of the greatest writers in the history of the English language.
From timeless tales such as The Jungle Book, to his rousing poetic masterpiece 'If - '...
Kipling's works have inspired millions of readers for generations.
So a Rudyard Kipling autograph is a significant piece for any collector.
A rare quotation in his hand is even better.
But if you could own a complete Rudyard Kipling manuscript...
A handwritten copy of one of his most celebrated poems...
That would be remarkable.
A major piece of literary history in your collection.
A piece like this.
Kipling wrote The Young Queen to celebrate the birth of Australia as a Commonwealth nation in 1901.
On 1 January 1901 The Commonwealth of Australia was established.
It was a historic moment. The birth of a new nation.
And to celebrate, Kipling wrote his famous poem 'The Young Queen'.
He depicted Australia as a “young Queen” ready to be crowned amongst the “Five Free Nations” of the British Empire: England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
"High on her red-splashed charger, beautiful, bold, and browned,
“Bright-eyed out of the battle, the Young Queen rode to be crowned.”
Kipling's poem was published in The Times, Harper's Weekly and The New York Tribune. It was a major literary event.
Complete Rudyard Kipling manuscripts such as this almost never appear on the open market.
And this is a copy of that very poem.
Handwritten by Rudyard Kipling himself circa 1901.
It comprises the full 10 verses, carefully penned on both sides of a single sheet of paper measuring 7” by 9”.
After 121 years it survives in superb condition, with just bisecting folds and faint toning.
Kipling's famous words remain bold and unfaded.
They flow across the page in crisp black ink. Every line a carefully crafted work of art.
And at the end he signs informally with his initials “R.K”.
(Which suggests this copy may have been a gift for a friend.)
In terms of rarity, condition and importance, this is a special item.
Kipling's words flow across this page as freely as the moment he wrote them back in 1901.
Literary collectors spend decades searching for a piece like this.
Handwritten manuscripts by writers such as Kipling are exceedingly rare.
Most of them are owned by major public institutions. Carefully stored away in archives for future generations. And with very good reason.
Kipling's novels, short stories and poems have remained in print around the globe for over 130 years.
And in 1907 he became the first English-language writer to win the Nobel Prize for literature.
He stands alongside those literary greats Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Jane Austen and Ernest Hemingway.
