Interasia Auctions will offer three sheets of 1980 Year of the Monkey stamps in its April 2 sale of postal history from the People’s Republic of China.
The design is red, displays a monkey and includes the number 8 - all cultural signifiers of good luck in China
Each is valued at $115,874-141,623 ahead of the Hong Kong auction.
Year of the Monkey stamps are far from rare and due to their high value are unlikely to become any rarer.
Unusually, the demand is mainly due to the fact that collectors and non-collectors alike just really like the design, with monkeys, the colour red and the number eight all indicators of good luck in China.
The record for a single sheet is $192,251, set at a 2011 auction.
