A rare example of the first stamp issued by the Canton of Geneva auctions this month.
The 1843 "Double Geneva" will sell at Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries' WorldWide Stamps and Postal History sale on April 25-28 in New York.
A collector's dream: large margins and beautiful colour
It has a $42,500 estimate.
That valuation is testament to the stamp's importance as Geneva's first philatelic offering, in addition to its rarity and quality.
Just 30,000 of these double stamps were issued.
"The vast majority of Double Geneva stamps are cut in on at least one side and/or have faults," explains the auctioneer.
"This example is the rare exception. In fact, it ranks as one of the very finest known. Its large margins, beautiful color, proof-like impression and perfect cancel all combine to make this one of the most eye appealing copies in existence."
The 5c + 5c stamp features a red Geneva Rosette cancel.
