A fine used example of the 1904 Russian 4k stamp with inverted groundwork headlined a strong Russian section in Cherrystone Philatelic Auctions' November 6-7 sale in New York.

The stamp is a superb used example of the 4k rose red, cancelled by a neat 1906 postmark. Well centred with fresh colour, it is marred only by a short perforation at the right, warranting its sale price of $14,000.
Described as "seriously undercatalogued", the stamp was accompanied by a 1995 Mikulski certificate.
The $14,000 final bid was matched by an unused example of the 15k stamp from Russia's 1924 definitives series with full original gum. A brilliant example with excellent centring, it is free of the faults that are normally found with this stamp.
