Cherrystone Philatelic Auctions' July 10-11 auction in New York stars a strong Russia section, with a rare block of four 18k violet stamps from the 1925 definitive issue set to lead.

The block is valued at $30,000, as one of just a few known to exist.
This series of stamps first appeared in 1922, each denomination issued with a portrait of a worker, peasant or soldier to reflect the new ideals of the Soviet Union.
Variations of these portrait designs continued to be issued throughout the 1920s.
The block is exceedingly rare, as only 1,000 18k stamps were printed in 1925 and only two to three blocks are known to exist today.
The example at auction is in superb condition, boasting large margins, fresh colour and having never been hinged. It is further enhanced by the addition of the signature of Roger Calves, a leading philatelist specialising in Russian stamps.

Also featuring in the sale is a complete sheet of 50 1915 10r stamps, the design of which has been dramatically shifted and displaced diagonally.
The inverted "V" shape has also been printed on two stamps at the bottom, making this an interesting and probably unique multiple. It is expected to sell in the region of $10,000.
