America's premier philatelic exhibition, the APS National Stamp Show, concluded this weekend past with Regency Superior being one of those to offer a huge range of stamps, with two $1m consignments, in Ohio.
One key section of the sale was John T Davis's collection of World Class Rarities including the Canadian Seaway Invert, the Trinidad Lady McCleod, some scarce Romania Moldavia Issues, and plenty more.
But as we expected, it was another of his stamp, the very rare Canada Victoria 12d black, which achieved top billing.
Well centred, it is a very fine appearing copy of one of the most coveted British North American stamps, with margins huge to ample, rich colour and a largely face-free target cancel.

It was listed with suggested price of $30,000, but that seemed a little modest to us given the high quality of the piece and so it proved, with bidders battling their way up to $40,000 - a more fitting price for such a well-preserved item.
Of course this is a long way from the greatest price achieved for a Canada Victoria 12 black as a freakishly well preserved example, known as the Black Empress, sold for $425,000 heading a spectacular Spink Shreves auction early this year.
That defeated even the Bill Gross examples from 2009.
Collectors with stamps from the region in their sights will be excited to see this Newfoundland inversion error is available away from the sale.
