Queen Elizabeth's teenage letter for sale at $9,000

A letter written by the teenage Queen Elizabeth II is attracting attention in the UK, having gone on sale among a collection of royal letters and autographs.

Queen Elizabeth teen letter
The young Princess Elizabeth is seven years away from becoming queen at the time of writing

The letter, written across six pages of Buckingham Palace headed notepaper, sees the soon to be queen gossiping about a "devastatingly attractive young giant" who caused her and Princess Margaret's "heart(s) to flutter a bit".

It is selling for £5,750 ($8,786).

The "young giant" was one of the Royal family's protection officers, who is named as Roddy McLeod from Skye. However, Elizabeth had already fallen in love with Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, whom she would marry two years later.

The missive is addressed to Elizabeth's cousin Diana Bowes-Lyon in November 1945, when the princess was just 19 years old. It is signed with her pet name, Lilibet.

Elizabeth also excitedly writes about dances and other men, adding that the wedding between John Wodehouse 4th Earl of Kimberley (1924-2002), and Diana Legh was a "tremendous" affair.

Yet she complains: "There must have been at least 500 people. It became so packed that one couldn't move without some horrid old lady listening to what one said to every man one met!'

The sale is being held to commemorate the birth of Prince George.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a magnificent collection of royal memorabilia for sale, including a striking signed photograph of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip with Princess Anne and Prince Charles, priced at just £1,750 (approx. $2,685).
