Bidding on a rare Apollo 13 flown UK flag stands at $7,000 in RR Auction’s space memorabilia sale.
That’s already well above its $3,000 low estimate, with two days left until the April 20 close date.
This is the first flown UK flag RR Auction has ever dealt with
While US flags were commonly carried on the Apollo missions, flags from other nations are considerably rarer.
In fact, RR explains this is the first flown UK flag it has ever seen.
The provenance is extremely good. It’s from the personal collection of Apollo 13 commander James Lovell and is attached to a mount signed by the whole crew.
Lovell writes in a letter of provenance: "I hereby certify that this National Flag of Great Britain was on board the Apollo 13 spacecraft…
“This flag was from my personal collection of space artifacts and has been in my possession since the mission."
The headline lot of the auction is undoubtedly this decal from the Apollo 11 command module, which is expected to beat $100,000.
There’s also a copy of Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon (1888) signed by 10 Apollo astronauts, including four who went to the Moon.
Some of the featured names include Dave Scott (Apollo 15), Alan Bean (Apollo 12) and Michael Collins (Apollo 11).
It’s expected to sell for in excess of $4,000.
