The 1946 Open Championship trophy presented to Sam Snead has topped Heritage Auctions' August 1-2 Platinum Night Sports Auction, which was held in Chicago.
The trophy starred among a selection of the legendary golfer's PGA career memorabilia, which the auction house described as the "finest ever grouping". It sold for $262,900.

Snead (1912-2002) is revered in the sport for his perfect swing, as well as 82 career PGA tour wins, including seven majors. Also starring from his collection was his 1954 Masters Championship trophy, which sold for $191,200.
Paul Fraser Collectibles is currently offering signed caps from Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

While Snead's memorabilia dominated the sale, baseball items were well represented as ever, with an early 1930s game worn cap from Yankees hero Lou Gehrig bringing $239,000.
Meanwhile, a 1927-1928 "Bustin' Babes" cap worn by Babe Ruth during his Barnstorming tour brought $155,350. Any worn item from the Barnstorming tours is extremely rare, with the cap believed to be a unique offering.

Hockey memorabilia offered in the sale included a New York Islanders jersey worn by Bob Nystrom in game six of the 1980 Stanley Cup Final, which made $44,812, while the stick that Wayne Gretzky used to score the 1,000th goal of his lifetime - aged just 13 - sold for $38,837.
Trading card highlights include the only known 1912 E300 Plow's Candy Christy Mathewson card, which was graded PSA NM-MT 8. The E300 issue was unknown until the 1950s and many of the cards have yet to be discovered, with only 122 examples graded by PSA. The card made an outstanding $113,525.
