A circa 1915 rookie-era Babe Ruth Type 1 press photo will be offered in a sale dedicated to the Bambino at Goldin Auctions.
It’s expected to sell for in excess of $10,000.
The photograph was originally taken for William Randolph Hurst’s International Film Service and is one of only a handful of originals from this era.
Before 1919 Babe Ruth played for the Boston Red Sox
It shows Ruth in his Red Sox uniform.
He was sold to the Yankees in 1919, a move Red Sox fans have rued ever since.
The auction house comments: “A thousand words could never do it justice. This masterpiece speaks for itself…
“…the Boston Bambino's bona-fide Type I's remain vastly undervalued.
“And we dare say there isn't a better one around than this candid, breathtaking, crystal-clear gem.”
With regards to press photographs, Type 1 means the image was printed from the original negative less than two years after it was taken (Type 2s were printed after two years and as a result often show more degradation).
Similar rookie shots of Babe Ruth have sold for major sums in the past, with another portrait from 1915 achieving $40,000 last year.
The auction will close on February 18.
The proceeds will go to the Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum in Baltimore.
