Bidders have boosted a 1930 Detroit Tigers jersey worn by Charlie Gehringer to the top spot in Grey Flannel Auctions' Summer Games Catalog Auction.

Gehringer's hit record is only equalled by Willie Mays, earning him a place in the Hall of Fame

The sale closed on June 18, with the jersey - a rare one-year style road example - selling for $85,602.

Gehringer (1903-1993) was one of the greatest hitters in the early history of baseball, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1949. He played 19 seasons for the Tigers, seeing a .320 batting average and seven seasons with more than 200 hits, more than Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle and rivalled only by Willie Mays.

The game-used jersey remains in excellent condition despite its age.

The Muderer's Row team were the greatest in Yankees history, led by the immortal Babe Ruth

Also starring was a magnificent 1927 New York Yankees signed photo, with all members of the famous "Murderer's Row" team led by Babe Ruth adding their autographs. It sold for $71,554.

The Yankees' 1927 season saw a record 110-44 finish, before the team went on to clear up in the World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Baseball memorabilia occupied much of the sale's highlights, yet a Chicago Bulls basketball jersey worn by the legendary Michael Jordan in his rookie year (1984-1985) made a strong posting at $25,076.

The market for Jordan memorabilia has really took off of late, as he is remembered by fans as the greatest player ever to grace the sport. In December 2013, the shoes he wore in the infamous "Flu Game" set a record for a pair of game-worn basketball shoes, selling for $31,000 with Grey Flannel.
