A presentation baseball bat awarded to J Whipple, captain of the Erie Baseball Club, in 1871 is to cross the block at Forsythe's Auctions in Ohio on January 31.

Valued at $8,000-12,000, it displays a crest of the club along with Whipple's name and the date.
While the physical location of the club is unknown (there were several clubs sharing the same name in New York and Philadelphia at the time) it remains a fascinating piece of memorabilia from the sport's earliest years.
