Chess pieces used in Swedish Director Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece film the Seventh Seal have been sold for $143k (or 1m Swedish crowns).

The pieces were among 339 items once owned by the Swedish "auteur" film maker, auctioned in Stockholm on Monday. All items came from the director's home on the remote Baltic island of Faaroe.

Lots included awards, notes written by Bergman and one of his desks - all selling for a total of $2.6m (18m crowns) reports the BBC.

The auction was viewed by 8,000 collectors and visited by Internet browsers in more than 100 countries, said the auctioneers.

"This exceeds all expectations," said Carl Barkman, head curator at Bukowski's auctioneers.
