Henry VIII was King of England from April 21 1509 until his death on January 28 1547.
Henry is one of the most significant figures in British history.
As a Monarch he is best known for his role in the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church.
His struggles with Rome lead to the separation of the Church of England from papal authority, establishing himself as the Supreme Head of the Church of England.
Historically he is equally well remembered for his 6 wives.

Unsurprisingly, few documents have survived the 460+ years since Henry's death.
Those that have tend to be in Museums.
The British Library has what is believed to be the largest collection of Henry VIII documents.
You can look but you can't touch.
That's what makes this document so amazing.

Written from his home at Hampton Court on July 1 1534.
A document signed 'Henry R' at the head, to Lord Windsor, Keeper of the Great Wardrobe.
In the document Henry orders Lord Windsor to summon Richard Gibson, son of the Sergeant at Arms, and with his advice and council....
"do cause our Toyle to bee sufficiently repayred in everything nedefull, so that it may bee with us the ixth day of this instant moneth of July"
The document is trimmed at the edges and slightly cockled.
It is in attractive condition and measures 160 x 220 mm.
Rarely do items of this nature survive the passing of time.
The King of England signed this letter on July 1 1534.
That's 86 years before the Pilgrim fathers left Plymouth.
Almost 200 years before George Washington was born...
