'Lighthouse' doorstop antique glows at $5,750

Dan Morphy Auctions' popular new series of Discovery Auctions continue to enjoy success - most recently on April 20, when 590 lots of advertising and toys sold for $140,000.

Figural cast iron, decorative art and a selection of dime registering banks were among the many historic and sought-after lots on offer.

An unusual success in the sale was this attractive eight-inch lighthouse doorstop, described in Dan Morphy's catalogue as the only-known example.

Estimated at $1,750-$2,000, it was unstoppable with bids eventually reaching $5,750.

Meanwhile, a 15½-inch-tall Bradley & Hubbard Owl on Pedestal doorstop realised a final price of $3,738.

Antique advertising was led by a 1930s-1940s Quaker State Oil poster of boys skinny-dipping at the old swimming hole. It made a big splash at $3,163.

Historic advertising memorabilia continues to be a lucrative niche. Matthews Auctions LLC's February sale included the sale of a unique Kelly Tires tin, bearing Hollywood star Shirley Temple's (unauthorised) likeness, for $13,000.
