In 1868, this $500,000 clock kept Standard Time in New England...

The clock in question is The Bond Shop Astronomical Regulator No 396, crafted by William Bond & Son and one of only three known examples in the world.

In addition, the clock boasts a provenance which matches its rarity, including a photograph of it standing in the window of the famous William Bond chronometer shop in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1944.

The clock's sibling, No 395, is presently held at the Merseyside County Museum, Liverpool, UK. Meanwhile, No 396 has been regularly mentioned in various published texts on clocks and timekeeping.

A piece of time: the Bond Shop Astronomical Regulator No 396

In the above video, Robert Cheney, director of science, watches and clocks at auction house Skinner introduces the watch and shows its movements, running exactly as they did in 1868. (It's certainly one of the most relaxing videos you'll ever see.)

Skinner will auction this spectacular and historic precision timekeeper on November 20 in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Its estimate? $300,000-500,000.
