Sotheby’s Pink Star diamond to smash record?

Sotheby’s is to offer the breathtaking Pink Star diamond in a jewels and jadeite sale in Hong Kong on April 4.

At 59.6 carats, it’s the largest internally flawless fancy vivid pink diamond ever offered for sale and features an estimate to match.

The Pink Star is the largest pink diamond on the market

The Pink Star is the world's largest pink diamond

It’s expected to make $60m.

That sets it on course to smash the world record for any diamond at auction, which was set at $57.5m for the 14.6 carat Oppenheimer Blue last year.

However, even this enormous valuation could turn out to be on the low side.

It sold for $83m in 2013, but the buyer, diamond cutter Isaac Woolf, backed out.

The current record holder for a pink diamond is the Graff Pink, which is around half the size of the Pink Star and realised $46.2m in 2010.

Quek Chin Yeow, deputy chairman of Sotheby’s Asia, said: “Over the years Sotheby’s Hong Kong has played host to many outstanding stones and sales; including the 118.28-carat oval D-colour flawless diamond sold in Oct 2013, the still-current world auction record for any white diamond, as well as the fancy vivid blue 10.10-carat De Beers Millennium Jewel 4 which set a record for any jewel sold at auction in Asia in April 2016.

“The market for the world’s finest diamonds and gem stones remains buoyant."
