An Only Watch auction, (the auction initiated by the charity Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy) was carried out on September 24 during the Monaco Yacht Show.
A Patek Philippe ref 5160, a BNB Concept for Confrérie Horlogère and a Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical made up a large part of the sales total, selling for €535,000, €280,000 and €220,000.
(A Tourbillon is a kind of carousel within the mechanism to compensate for the effects of gravity in a watch.)
The Patek Philippe was specially adapted for the event.
Its beautiful rose gold case contains a Prussian blue face depicting the cosmos as viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, and the movement of the stars. The date and phases of the moon are also viewable.
The back of the watch is also see through, to allow the workings to be observed.
Another recent auction saw two Patek Phillipe watches sell for large sums.
All the proceeds of the event will go towards research into a childhood disease known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
