1790 Cognac Grande Champagne sells for $50,000

The lot headlined a sale of whisky, cognac and rare spirits in New York on April 30.

Still drinkable? The cognac was produced over 200 years ago

The label reads "Exposition Universelle Paris, 1878, 1er Prix Medaille d'Or. L.Viel.- Paris" while the manufacturer's address is listed as: "Caves Elysees, 8 Rue de Duras, Paris".

It was bottled by Napoleon Alexandre & Cie of Paris.

Ancient cognacs tend to perform well at auction, due to their incredible rarity. The record for a cognac in its original bottle was set in 2010, when an 1858 Croizet sold for $156,740 at an auction in China.
