The autumn season began with a bang at Acker Auctions last weekend, with their September sale of fine wines witnessing some impressive prices.

The sale took place in a packed salesroom at The Central Park Boathouse in New York City and it was clear to the collectors attending that bidding for these wines would be fierce.

In total the event grossed a massive £3.2m ($4.9m) with bids coming in from within the room, on the phones and over the internet. In total a massive 97%+ of lots were sold, with some standout prices providing notable highlights.

One unique lot, saw the sale of a jeroboam of the 2005 vintage La Tache, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC). A jeroboam is a large wine bottle which carries the capacity of around four standard bottles or 3 litres of wine. Collectors were obviously drawn to this unusual lot, as the bottle sold for £13,444 ($20,740).

Elsewhere, 12 bottles of the La Tache DRC 1996 vintage sold for £14,235 ($21,960) in what was considered a similarly strong price for the Chateau.

Another highlights saw 12 bottles of the 2005 Musigny from J.F Mugnier came up for auction. Described by one reviewer as "one of the greatest wines in this domaine's history" this lot also sold for £14,235 ($21,960).

And these sales figures were only the beginning.

Two separate 12 bottle lots of the 2000 vintage of the Chateau Lafite Rothschild sold for £15,820 ($24,400). The 2000 vintage appears to be continuing the Chateau's impressive record at auction, which saw 12 bottles of the 1982 vintage selling for £39,100 ($60,320) back in July 2010.

The second highest lot continued the Bordeaux Chateau's dominance of the auction, with the sale of 2 bottles of the rare 1934 Romanee Conti DRC for £39,540 ($61,000).

Previously, a 12 bottle case of the 1988 vintage sold for £52,900 ($81,610), yet this sale surpassed even that, with the 1934 edition averaging at a stunning £19,770 ($30,500) per bottle.

Yet the star lot of the sale surpassed all others by a considerable way, having sparked a bidding war amongst the collectors in attendance.

The rare 12 bottle case of the Vosne Romanee Les Gaudichots, DRC came from the 1929 vintage, making the wine over 80 years old. With competition for the lot fierce, the final sale price came to £98,850 ($152,500).

The success of the auction helped to demonstrate the continuing strength of the fine wine market and in particular, the potential growth of an investment in wines from the Bordeaux region.
