Cause for celebration... Salon Champagne bottle makes World Record price

As we've reported, Acker Merrall and Condit's recent fine wine auction in Hong Kong was a great success, with a grand total of HK$91.87m/US$11.78m and a 98% sold rate.

Taking the lead was a rare original wooden 12-bottle case of the legendary 1990 DRC Romanee-Conti (Lot 706), which realized a staggering HK$2,318,000/US$297,179 after numerous competitive bids in a heated battle, establishing a world auction record for a 12-bottle case of 1990 DRC Romanee-Conti.

But whilst Burgundy was certainly the strongest group overall, waves were being made elsewhere in the sale too.

Acker Merrall also presented 33 exquisite lots of Champagne that came directly from the cellars of the House of Salon in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, combined with those from the world's greatest Champagne collector, Robert Rosania.

Of note, a bottle of 1955 Salon (Lot 365) sold for HK$46,360/US$5,944, the highest price for any single bottle of Salon sold at auction, thereby establishing the world record.

World auction records were also set for 4 other Salon vintages, including 12 bottles of 1982 Salon (HK$78,080/US$10,010, Lot 378), 6 magnums of 1995 Salon (HK$36,600/US$4,692 each, Lot 382-383), 3 bottles of 1959 Salon (HK$87,840/US$11,262, Lot 366), and a bottle of 1966 Salon (HK$43,920/US$5,631, Lot 369).

Vintage Champagne is a growing market. Recently a bottle of 1911 Moet & Chandon was sold by Christie's as the headline item in a charity auction and won by Indian film actor and producer Abhay Deol, who also had the chance to take lunch with Scarlett Johansson as a result.
