Bonhams is holding a sale of fine and rare wines today - and it's a big one with a grand 744 lots of sweet and fruity vintages.
Interestingly, the wine that's leading the sale in the form of two 12-bottle lots is Château Lafite Rothschild 1986, despite this being yet to establish itself as an exceptional vintage to drink.
Several critics, including the influential Wine Doctor website, have noted "future potential" in its young purple appearance, "sweet, blackcurrant pastille" nose and "firm tannins/sweet fruit" rather than current complexity.
The expectation is that it may well become a genuinely great wine in the future, and that means it's an excellent investment for anyone with a good cellar. The 12-bottle lot in better condition (in its original wooden case) is estimated at £11,000-13,000.
Other key lots in the sale are two 12-bottle lots of Château Latour 1982, listed at £10,000-12,000, a 10-bottle lot of Mouton-Rothschild (£6,500-8,000) from the same year and a set of Clos de la Roche 1990 (£8,000-10,000).
The auction is taking place today at Bonhams in London. Watch this space for the results.
