'Larger than life' fine wine sale expected to make $1.5m at Sotheby's

Connoisseurs of fine wine are in for a treat next Wednesday July 6, because London auction house Sotheby's is putting a collection of fantastic vintages up for sale.

Starring in the event, called A Classic Bordeaux Collection Featuring Three Glorious Decades, will be bottles produced from some of the very best vineyards in France. These include the likes of Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafite and Chateau Haut Brion.

However, the lots which undoubtedly will provide the biggest draw for collectors and investors are the Imperials, including those produced by Chateau Petrus 2000, Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 and Chateau Cheval Blanc 2000.

The amazing items are far bigger than the normal size of standard wines, with one Imperial being the equivalent of eight regular bottles, which can serve as many as 15 or 20 people.

Chateau Petrus is undoubtedly one of the world's finest wine producers

The entire collection being offered includes 441 lots, and is expected to make more than $1.5m. The bottles have come from what Sotheby's has described as an important wine cellar which belonged to a 'knowledgeable continental wine lover'.

The Imperial which is expected to reach the highest price is the Chateau Petrus 2000, after it was given a guide value of £20,000-26,000 ($31,900-41,500).

Widely regarded as one of the finest wines money can buy, it is sourced from the Pomeral appellation in the prestigious Bordeaux production area of France.

Its complex taste has been likened to that of a 'Christmas pudding' because of its density and richness. Another extremely fine lot is an Imperial of Chateau Lafite 2000, which is valued at between £12,000-16,000 ($19,000-25,500).

Other bottles which will be sure to whet bidder's appetites will be examples of First Growth wines including the Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 Imperial which is expected to sell for £5,500-6,500 ($7,300-8,000).

There is no doubt that this is a wonderful collection which anyone looking to invest in wine should be interested in.

With many of the bottles given quite modest estimates considering their high quality, this is a fantastic chance to either start a new collection or improve your current one.
