'Perfect' 1961 Petrus to sell online

Absentee bidders only have two more days to get involved in Edward Roberts International fine wines auction, which takes place this forthcoming Sunday, December 13.

The auctioneers' fifth rare wine auction will feature a duo of legendary Pétrus vintages: the 1961, and 1962 Château Pétrus - regarded as one of the most unique and distinctive Bordeaux wines.

Leading expert Robert Parker has described the 1961 as "pure perfection", giving it 100 points.

Reminiscent of 1947 Pétrus and 1947 Cheval Blanc, the fully mature wine boasts a port-like richness, and "viscous, thick, over-ripe black cherry, mocha-tinged fruit flavours," said Parker.

Meanwhile, the fully-mature, medium-bodied 1962 has a minty, chocolatey, herbal, cedary-scented nose within a dark ruby colour, only slightly amber around the edge.

Although "not that powerful or opulent," according to Parker, "it is an outstanding example of Pétrus made in a more graceful, elegant manner." He awarded it 91 points.

A collection of Pétrus vintages was also auctioned at Sotheby's last Tuesday, December 8, including a 1982 and 1959.

Online bidding will close at 6pm this Saturday, December 12. The auction will take place the day after, at the Union League Club of Chicago, US.
