Sweet, aniseedy Chateau Petrus 1982 leads Sotheby's wine sale

Following on swiftly from their anniversary in London, Sotheby's are holding another major sale of fine and rare wines in New York tomorrow (September 25).

Although they've managed to pack this one into one day, it is no minor auction comprising 713 lots, many with five figure estimates in an interesting and varied auction that collectors will not want to miss.

Weighing in at $30,000-50,000 is a 12 bottle lot of La Tache 1990 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. The bottles have seen better days with significant label damage and some nicked capsules, but they are in their original wooden case.

Sotheby's Serena Sutcliffe notes the wine's "...deep colour and a wonderfully rich, mysterious, smoky black fruit nose. Cassis, vanilla pod and blackberries bouquet. Utterly voluptuous. A giant wine of extreme splendour and total intensity. Extraordinary depth and layers."

Just a little way below it are 12 bottles of the Chateau Latour 1982, listed at $20,000-30,000. "Rich, fabulous nose, so cedary. Great cedary fruit on the palate [...]An incredible treat." according to Sutcliffe.

However, the sale is primarily given over to a range of vintages from Chateau Petrus - a truly impressive range from the 11.4 hectare vineyard with more than one case from 1961, 1998, 2000 and even the extraordinary 1982.

Petrus 1982 is a vintage that some collectors and investors become obsessed with above all else. Renowned for its sweet, pruney, aniseedy flavours it stands neck and shoulders above almost everything else in the sale, and each case is offered at $40,000-60,000.

We'll bring you the results just as soon as they're available.
