Next week, Leland Auctions is going to be holding another of their fine and rare wine sales.
Most of the lots are quite small, just a few bottles at a time, so they are cheaper than some of the ones which might usually be expected to go under the hammer at Christie's or Sotheby's, but the quality is there in vintage, and that makes them a valuable investment.
There are two lots (or rather four lots, with both sets coming in pairs) which are particularly worthy of investment.
Firstly there are two identical lots of three bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild - Vintage 2000, in good condition with its original tissue and most of its original wooden case.
As we've noted, Robert Parker was particularly enamoured of this wine, awarding it 100 points and noting, "A compelling wine, with extraordinary precision, great intensity, and a seamlessness... The finish lasted a whopping 72 seconds! This is utterly fascinating stuff"
Lafite is of course is particularly coveted in China at the moment, which is the fastest expanding market for wine.
The expected top lot, however, is one of the few 12 bottle lots, presenting Chateau Haut-Brion 1982 in its original wooden case.
Parker awarded this 99 points and noted "An extraordinary effort that gets better with each tasting, this dark, murky, garnet/purple-colored 1982 exhibits a fabulously complex nose of hot bricks, asphalt, black fruits, tar, roast beef, and truffles...
"...colossal concentration, super-ripeness, an unctuous texture, and low acidity. While still exceptionally youthful, this wine is powerful, dense, large-scaled, and intense... A candidate for perfection!"
Estimated at $7,000-$8,000 it will sell on Friday December 3, online.
