A 71-year-old single malt Generations Glenlivet whisky sold for £15,000 yesterday, £2,000 above its high end estimate.
The 1940-distilled whisky was auctioned at Bonhams, with all funds going towards the British Red Cross Japan Appeal for victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami.
Scottish whisky bottler Gordon & MacPhail donated the whisky, which was the first of just 100 full-size bottles produced from the 1940 crop.

It is one of the world's most expensive bottles of whisky ever auctioned and evidence that whiskies can be an exciting investment.
Norman McKinley, the director of the British Red Cross in Scotland, commented: "This is a tremendous sum to have raised.
"The costs of the relief effort and of rebuilding the homes and lives of those affected will be immense."
The current auction record for a single malt stands at the £33,000 paid for a 1926 Macallan at a Christie's sale in 2008.
