British East Africa 1895-96 5r ultramarine and violet, type 9 overprint on India ERROR OVERPRINT DOUBLE, SG63a.

A fine and fresh mint example with original gum. One shortish perforation and insignificant gum wrinkles, which do not detract from overall quality

An extremely rare overprint error with only 11 examples recorded.

Provenance: Ex: The "Shivani Collection of British East Africa Stamps and Postal History.

Accompanied with a British Philatelic Association (BPA) certificate of authenticity (1969).

The process of applying the “British East Africa” overprint to Indian stamps was performed manually by native “craftsmen” at the office of the Zanzibar Gazette. As a result of the manual process, there are an abundance of errors which occurred making them a fascinating and curious area of stamp errors to collect. It is an area of specialisation which has captivated collectors from all over the world.
