Great Britain 1915 5s bright carmine "Seahorses" (watermark reversed), SG409wj.
A very fine unmounted mint example, with full original gum and stunning colour, of this rare De La Rue watermark printing variety.
GB Specialised Catalogue No: N67(1)c.
The Seahorses stamp issue is, arguably, the most beautiful stamp ever designed. At the time of first issue in 1913, they represented a miniature piece of propaganda on the eve of the Great War. They portray Britain's image of herself screaming imperial power, might, tradition, pomp and circumstance.
They were also the most successful British stamps ever issued. They were in circulation longer than any other British high value stamp for 26 years from 1913 to 1939.
