Description

Papua 1930 (15 Sep) 1s sepia and olive, "AIR MAIL" Harrison printing, type 11 overprint in carmine, ERROR OVERPRINT INVERTED, SG117a.

A brilliant quality mint example, exceptionally lightly hinged with fresh white gum. An outstanding example of this classic airmail rarity, which shows the plane "looping the loop".

Only one sheet of 40 originally existed and now virtually unobtainable in this quality, with most available examples showing some degree of gum toning.

Provenance: Ex Huston and King Carol of Romania, with characteristic handstamps on reverse (including "SANABRIA") and Bloch's pencil initials.

Accompanied with a 2015 Royal Philatelic Society (RPS) certificate of authenticity.

The key Australian States error stamp, dubbed the "Australian Jenny" due to its similarities with the famous US "Inverted Jenny". It is worth noting that there are 100 examples of the Inverted Jenny, which sell for upwards of $1.5 million.
