- Two sketchbooks from artist Maurice Feild
- More than 240 pages of sketches and notes from the 1970s
Maurice Feild (1905-1988) was a British realist painter and teacher with work in major collections, including the National Gallery and the UK Government Art Collection. He taught at the Slade School of Fine Art, a centre of excellence, for many years. One of his students, the painter Lawrence Gowing, described him as "among the unsung influences on British painting”.
This is a pair of sketchbooks belonging to the artist Maurice Feild, an important figure in British realist painting. The red one measures 6 x 4.4 inches. The black one is 5.2 x 4 inches. Most of the drawings inside correspond to Feild’s regular themes and include portraits of children and landscape studies.
The quality is high throughout. Feild had an excellent eye and could convey a detailed scene in a few well chosen lines. This is an opportunity to acquire a large number of works from an underappreciated figure in British painting.
