Description

  • An original E.H Shepard drawing of Winnie the Pooh.
  • Signed and dated by the artist in January 1970.

Winnie the Pooh is one of the most popular and beloved characters in English literature.

Created in 1925 by author A.A Milne, the stories featuring Pooh, Christopher Robin and a host of other famous characters became a global phenomenon.

The original books were illustrated by English artist E.H Shepard, whose drawings perfectly captured their magical sense of childhood.

They have delighted millions of readers around the world for almost a century, and created a media empire worth more than $6 billion each year.

An original E.H Shepard pencil and ink drawing of Winnie the Pooh.

Like many of Shepard's later drawings, the sketch is on a single piece of off-white card measuring approximately 4 inches by 3 inches (10cm by 7cm).

Shepard has signed the work beneath with a clear example of his signature, and dated it “9/1/70”.

In excellent condition.

Shepard's original Winnie the Pooh drawings are amongst the most valuable and sought-after in all of children's literature.

In 2018 Shepard's illustrated map of the 100 Acre Wood, which features in the stories, sold for £430,000 ($571,370) – a world-record price for an original book illustration which stands to this day.

A truly exceptional piece.
