Description

  • A note of remembrance handwritten and signed by King Charles III
  • Dedicated to the fallen warriors of the 1879 Battle of Isandlwana
  • Also including a rare handwritten quote from the 1914 Ode to Remembrance

This is a superb Charles III autograph, handwritten and signed as Prince of Wales on an official British Royal mourning card.

Charles writes in black ink:

“In memory of those courageous men of the 24th Regiment of Foot, and of the great Zulu Nation, who lost their lives during the Battle of Isandlwana on 22nd January 1879."

The note is signed neatly "Charles, Colonel-in-Chief, the Royal Regiment of Wales.”

The card measures 9.7 x 12cm and is in good condition with some minor water and tape staining, consistent with it once possibly being attached to a remembrance wreath of flowers.

Given the age wear and the solitary signature, we believe the card to be dated prior to Charles' marriage to Princess Diana in 1981.

On the reverse of the card Charles has inscribed a quote from the 'Ode to Remembrance'.

"They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn...We shall remember them".

This famous verse from Laurence Binyon's 1914 poem 'For the Fallen' is traditionally recited on Remembrance Day in the U.K and Anzac Day in Australia.

It is the only example of these iconic words handwritten by King Charles - or any other British Royal figure - that we have been able to find.

Therefore we believe this card to be highly rare, and possibly even unique to the market.

A magnificent piece of British Royal and military history. Discover more in our newsletter.
