Sir Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington (1769 – 1852) was one of Britain's greatest military leaders.
As commander of the British Army he famously defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
The 'Iron Duke' died a veteran of some 60 battles across the Empire, a leading statesman and twice a British Prime Minister.
The document is an official military warrant, partially printed on parchment and dated September 17, 1826.
Wellington signed it as Master-General of the Ordinance - one of the British Army's most senior positions, first established in 1415.
He was responsible for all British artillery, engineers, fortifications, military supplies, transport, and field hospitals.
With this warrant, he appointed Captain Charles Douglas to be "Barrack Master for the Service of the Forces of Great Britain and Ireland".
Wellington's name and his many official titles are emblazoned boldly at the top.
The document is in fair condition, with folding marks and some water staining partly affecting the text and the signature.
Beautifully mounted, framed and glazed along with a portrait of Wellington, to an overall size of 39 cm by 69 cm.
A large and rarely seen document, handsomely presented for display, and signed by one of Britain's greatest national heroes.
