- A King Henry VIII signed royal document dating from 1544
- Impressively sized and professionally restored to a museum-quality standard
King Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) is the most famous King in English history and the father of Elizabeth I. Known for his six wives and his enormous appetites, Henry's turbulent 38-year reign included the Protestant Reformation which created the Church of England.
This large royal document measures 22.5 inches by 15 inches (57cm by 38cm) and is in very good condition.
The manuscript is beautifully written on parchment in Latin, and has been professionally restored to a museum-quality standard.
Henry VIII signs "Henry R" prominently in the upper right corner.
This is an official royal document regarding ownership of land in Sussex, which had passed down from a former tenant to his daughter.
In old English law, the Crown had taken custody of the land until she came of age, in a form of tenure known as a 'capite'. By signing the document, Henry granted permission for tenure to be returned to the woman and her husband.
The first line in Latin reads: “Henricus Octavus dei gratia Angliae, Franciae, et Hiberniae Rex, fidei defensor et in terra ecclesiae Anglicanae et Hiberniae supremum caput.”
This translates as: “Henry the Eighth, by the grace of God, King of England, France, and Ireland, defender of the faith and supreme head in the land of the Church of England and Ireland.”
The last line translates as “on the 18th day of February in the 35th year of reign” which dates it as February 18, 1544.
This a superb Tudor royal document in stunning display-worthy condition, which would serve as a fitting centrepiece in any English history collection.
