A first edition hardcover copy of Crusader Without Violence, the first biography of the celebrated U.S Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Written by the acclaimed historian Dr. Lawrence D. Reddick, and published by Harper and Brothers in 1959.
Measuring 6 x 8.5 inches, with 243 pages. In fine condition, with a later replacement dustjacket (not original).
Signed on the first free end page in black ink “Martin Luther King, Jr.”
King's large signature is an exceptional example.
Signed with bold simplicity, without any personal inscription or dedication.
Reddick was a close friend of King and a member of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery where he served as pastor.
As an activist, he stood alongside King during the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott, which transformed the American Civil Rights movement in 1956.
This book is Reddick's first-hand account of King's rise to national prominence. It was critically acclaimed and helped bring his story to a wider audience - but it also proved costly to Reddick, whose activism saw him fired from his role as Chair of History at Alabama State College.
As such, a signed copy of this rare book is a significant find.
This is one of the very finest Martin Luther King Jr. autographs we've ever offered, which will undoubtedly be a standout piece in any collection.
