A hugely rare 1943 Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret signed photo
- A scarce royal signed photograph, taken during the Christmas pantomime Aladdin at Windsor Castle in December 1943.
The glossy 10.25 x 8-inch image shows the cast, with Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret standing on either side of Hubert Tannar, Headmaster of the Royal School in Windsor Great Park.
Both have signed beautifully in fountain pen, “Elizabeth” and “Margaret.”
A Studio Lisa credit stamp appears on the reverse.
Presented in a leather display case with a printed copy of the original programme. In fine condition, with some light creasing.
Between 1941 and 1944, Christmas pantomimes were performed in the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle. The idea came from Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who took leading roles.
Their parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, encouraged the productions to bring festive cheer to local children during WWII.
Hubert Tannar wrote and produced the plays, featuring local children, evacuees, and friends of the princesses. Occasionally, service personnel from Windsor took part. The audience was always enthusiastic. Proceeds went to the Wool Fund, which supplied knitting wool for comforters for the armed forces.
A charming and historic piece, capturing a rare moment from the wartime years of Britain’s future queen.
