A highly rare Winston Churchill signed legal contract, regarding publishing rights to his book series 'A History of the English-Speaking Peoples'.
A two-page document in very fine condition, with a single central vertical fold.
Dated May 15, 1956.
Featuring a clear, bold example of Churchill's signature, signed on the third page in black fountain pen ink and accompanied with a red wax seal.
This official legal contract covers "the exclusive first and second serial rights in all languages in newspapers and periodicals in Volume two of The History [of the English Speaking Peoples] throughout the World excluding the Western Hemisphere and the British Isles and Eire" and "the exclusive rights of publication in book form in all languages other than the English language in Volume Two of the History in all parts of the World other than the Western Hemisphere excluding Canada".
The contract assigned these rights to Churchill's wife Clementine, along with three other close friends:
- Brendan Bracken – one of Churchill's closest political allies, who served as First Lord of the Admiralty in his War Cabinet
- Frederick Lindemann - Churchill's friend and chief scientific advisor during WWII
- Anthony Forbes Moir – Churchill's trusted solicitor of 20 years
