- A prop stunt axe from Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film The Shining (1980)
- Used by Jack Nicholson in his portrayal of Jack Torrance
- A rare opportunity to own arguably the most striking prop in cinema history
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), based on Stephen King’s novel, regularly tops lists of most terrifying horror films. Jack Nicholson’s door-breaking axe scene is regarded as among the most iconic in cinema history.
This lightweight, hard foam axe was used in filming Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film The Shining (1980).
This prop stunt axe was substituted for the original wooden axe as a safety measure and for ease of use during filming. It would have been used in long shots and when two or more characters were on screen.
Made of hard polyfoam. 89cm (35 inches) in length. The handle has been professionally painted to resemble wood grain, replicating the look of the “hero” wooden axe. The foam head features silver tape to resemble the metal surface.
Displays a pleasing amount of on-set use, including some paint loss to the handle, and slight wrinkling of the silver tape.
Housed in a stunning display case (101 x 65 x 5.5cm), behind UV resistant and anti-glare conservation glass, to ensure the piece has incredible eye appeal for decades to come.
Showcased with a fully authenticated signed photo of Nicholson from the film, and plaque.
Warner Bros. created several axes for filming The Shining.
Just one original wooden axe is thought to remain in existence. It sold for £172,000 ($211,000) in 2019.
Only a tiny number of foam versions are believed to still exist. A similar example to ours sold for £144,000 ($175,000) in 2022.
A red jacket worn onscreen by Jack Nicholson in the film auctioned for £73,200 ($90,000) in 2017.
This is a rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic props in movie history.
